One Cannot Make Men Good By Law

Image
One Cannot Make Men Good By Law If we are to go through all the texts/compositions/folklores of men, from the beginning of time, regardless of its origin in religion, science, myths etc., the constant dramatic portrayal and mention of good and bad is unavoidable. It is, as if the dichotomy between the good and evil was not only deemed established, but was sensed so, in the day to day living of the people. The importance of being a virtuous Samaritan had been stressed enough number of times in various forms, and its practice was rewarded as well. Duties and responsibilities were respected, expected and encouraged, unquestioningly. It is when the task of upholding them shifted from the individual to the society at large, or a specific section of it, do we see the deterioration of quality and with this came the enforcement, through decrees, regulations and laws. This passing of baton had done more harm than benefit, as it resulted on the whole, impersonal laws, which though of human...

Centre  Par Excellence – Ramakrishna Math & Mission, Mangalore We’ve all come across at least once in our lives, institutes, which have profoundly impacted our views, and helped lay a foundation on which we could build the edifice of our being. Places which have stood the test of time, which have become the beacons of strength in the ever-changing landscape of family, work and society. The importance of such institutes can never be communicated in rhetoric words, as their influence run deeper into our souls and are too pure to be stained with our flamboyant review of them. Yet, their enormous contributions in our lives, mandates that we remember them fondly. Hence, by expressing our gratitude we put into practice the lessons we have so affectionately been taught by them. The legacy that has been bequeathed to the masses of our country after years of penance and perfection by the noble and charismatic Swami Vivekananda, in the form of Ramakrishna Math & Mission ha...

The Value of a Forest – The Man, the Myth, and the Legend - Jadav Molai Payeng

The Value of a Forest – The Man, the Myth, and the Legend - Jadav Molai Payeng What is the purpose behind teaching Environmental Science from the early grades and then see it bifurcated into more serious disciplines and finally, on ground, watch it getting tossed similar to the countless wrappers that we see lying on the streets? Well, the answer is, I don’t know and I don’t care or maybe its governments problem…etc.… and this is how the majority of us carry on living with the most pressing problems of our times. But there are exceptions and it is these exceptions that offer a new ray of hope to the masses. It is not by their gregarious proclamation of solutions, which they rarely do, but by the sheer simplicity and resolute will to make and live the change, and this is what makes them appealing and so successful. Sometime ago, an individual who barely was on the radar of any newspaper/channel, rose to prominence, on the grounds of his colossal work, which set an example an...

Absurdism: As absurd as it sounds?

Image
Absurdism: As absurd as it sounds? The premise on which the entire theory or philosophy of Absurdism is based on is that the universe in itself offers no reason to what it is, additionally, it is meaningless in its myriad offerings. It further claims that the cosmos as a whole is absurd. The absurdity is due to the conflict arising as a result of an individual trying to find a meaning in this otherwise meaningless world. Absurdism says that the ultimate purpose to life or living doesn’t exist and directs our attention to the insignificance of human existence in this vast universe. If one refers back to the early writings of absurdism, three prime responses have been suggested to deal with it, namely, suicide, belief (religious) and revolt (against absurd). Revolt is highly recommended as it acknowledges the absurdity of the universe, unlike the former two, which are just an escape or aversion from it. Later, other methods have been added to these by the thinkers of absurdism ...

River Nethravathi – The Glorious Past, The Confused Present & An Uncertain Future   “Paropakaraya vahanthi nadyaha” – rivers flow for the benefit of others, and such is the nature of this serene and life-giving river ‘Nethravathi’ for the population that calls Dakshina Kannada as home in the south western region of Karnataka State in India. However, for the ease of governance and management this region has been divided into 5 major commercial centres namely Mangalore, Bantwal, Belthangady, Puttur and Sullya. Yet, the river Nethravathi has provided its wealth to all unequivocally and unreservedly. The river has unconditionally provided us with its rich sand which are regularly extracted from many of its banks and the population of the region and elsewhere owe their gratitude to it, for it has put a strong roof over their head and has resulted in the growth of the region. The river is a rich source of food for both humans and animals alike with varieties of fresh wa...
